Carefully consider others’ spoken words and whether

honest intentions are behind them. If not, they are meaningless.

~Appearances and Attitude—The Genteel Lady’s Guide to Practical Living

Brette kicked at the leaves dusting the Hyde Park walking path. Yesterday afternoon’s rainstorm had shaken myriads loose, and a colorful, soggy quilt covered the ground. Puddles pooled here and there, despite the brightly shining sun. The golden rays failed to warm the air, however, and a nippy breeze chilled her face.

She’d forgotten her handkerchief, and the cold made her nose run. She sniffed loudly, kicking another bunch of leaves.

Unfair. So blasted unfair.

How could anyone suspect Alex of such grotesque crimes as arson and murder? He’d assured her and Heath he had an alibi, but strain, nevertheless, marked his features. How could it not until he’d been vindicated?

A few feet away, a scolding squirrel scampered up a tree and Brooke, strolling with Heath behind Brette, laughed. A trifle wan, Brooke had dared a short walk today. The fresh air would benefit her. The babe too.

Brette couldn’t decide if she wanted a niece or a nephew. She planned on spoiling the darling no matter the infant’s sex. Spinster aunts were permitted the luxury. Her musings turned to last night. Dinner had passed pleasantly enough, but the undercurrent of Alex’s disconcerting revelation had kept the mood somber. He’d departed the house early this morning, leaving word with Jenkin he’d be gone the entire day.

Drat it all.

Brette shouldn’t have been disappointed. They were merely friends, and couldn’t be anything more. That truth shouldn’t have bothered so much. But it did, nonetheless.

An unkind giggle drew her from her musings.

The three Gambwell sisters and their severe mother approached from the opposite direction. The fair weather had lured many outdoors this morning, including unpleasant creatures normally hiding beneath rocks or staying abed until noon.

Margaret Gambwell pointed at Brette and whispered, sotto voce, in Charlotte’s ear. “Isn’t Bret a man’s name?”

Both erupted into gales of laughter while the third and youngest sister, Harriot, coldly stared at Brette.

Third time this week.

She could expect more of the same. Mayhap tomorrow, she’d take her constitutional in The Green Park.

Brette refused to slow her stride or shirk away. Head held high, she continued on, but as she passed the tittering misses, the dame lifted her nose as if she smelled something foul, pointed her haughty gaze skyward, and yanked her skirts aside. The younger women immediately followed suit.

The cut sublime.

An anger-borne flush heated Brette’s cheeks, but she braced her shoulders and slanted her head politely. She’d not degrade herself and respond in kind, though she itched to give the pompous quartet a piece of her mind.

“There you are, Miss Culpepper,” Alex called, waving his hand and looking exceedingly dashing in a Spanish brown greatcoat. He held a puppy clasped in his other arm. “Please forgive me for my tardiness. I’m afraid Domino here escaped me, and I was forced to chase the rascally whelp.”

Impeccable timing. Brette couldn’t prevent her overjoyed smile. “Lord Wycombe.”
